Found this table on a Facebook “for sale group” for only $20. Looking like junk, we knew it was a solid piece (good bones we like to say). Tried painting it but wasn’t happy & put it aside for quite some time until we had a FrugElegant idea…
A one stop shopping trip to our local craft store for supplies: Roll of Poly Foam, Spray Adhesive, Paint, Material & bonus- a decorative tray. (help link options for supplies used are at the end of the post).
We turned the table upside down for easy painting.
The Stain Enamels by DecoArt was a perfect paint. Easy to apply & easy to clean up. We like easy!
Before painting, we did do a very very light sanding per the paint instructions. Because the table is old & scratched up, we could’ve done more sanding but we want to keep some of the worn look so only a light sanding was needed.
Next, we rolled out foam, mark with a sharpie marker & cut to size with scissors. We used the spray adhesive to secure the foam into place.
This is where we could say this is probably the hardest part.. making sure our material is positioned how we like it & turning the table over for stapling into place. When picking a fabric we tried to take into consideration & avoid patterns that would be show any imperfections.
Staple the material underneath the table into place using a staple gun.
There are a few options for corners, we decide to go with a simple & tight fold over.
Very important to pull the fabric very tightly. This will give it a very professional finished look. If you look from the bottom, you can see are the staples & the material cut to fit. If you want to give it a more “finished” look, there are lots of options to cover the staples. We chose not to because no one is going to be looking at the bottom where we are going to use this ottoman.
Perfectly imperfect! Using the sandpaper, we lightly sanded the edges for a distressed look.
Frugelegance Style in the family tv room. It will be perfect for snacks, tv remotes & for comfortably resting feet.
This black wooden tray was a great find in the craft store! Love the Theater Pillows? We found these beauties at Kirklands. Another great selection can be found on Amazon too. Such an easy & inexpensive touch!!
Who would ever guess this was that old junky outdated table? It has completely changed into a chic & useful piece that we love.
We purchased all needed supplies at our local craft store but we always like to help our Frug-Readers find good online shopping options. Don’t forget to use coupons & promo codes!
Supplies we used:
- Spray High Strength Spray Adhesive
- Satin Enamels Black Paint
- Poly Foam Roll comes in different sizes & thicknesses. We are using a 2″ thick. If you want thinner, there is a 1″ padding or thicker options too.
- Fabric. This is a little tricky for online. There are lots of great options. Keep in mind using a thicker, more heavy weight fabric. As well as patterns & which would be less or more forgiving. For example, if you get a check & you pull tighter on one area more than another, it will show in your pattern more.
- Staple Gun & Staples
- Decorative Wood Black Tray from the craft store. Some other great options are on Amazon & more..

Thanx so much Jessica! The greatest part is you dont need much skill to do this. Just keep in mind easy painting & forgiving patterns on the fabric and this project can be done easily. We like to keep things simple 😉

What a great project! I love the way it turned out! My husband and I always comment on the ottomans in hotels we stay at. We love them but have yet to buy one. Maybe this is the way to go!

We have an old coffee table that could use some makeover love. Turning it into an ottoman is probably the best solution since everyone puts their feet on it anyway! Thanks for sharing with us at Creatively Crafty #ccbg!
