Small space living has its challenges. There are times when life requires a little more space, such as for work or for a growing family. Transforming a large closet into a small office or bedroom might seem difficult, but really, it only needs a few main items to turn it into a productive and useful space.
Creating a comfortable and yet organized space is key. Here’s how we turned this closet into a fabulous baby’s nursery, Frug-Elegance style, of course (frugal yet elegant).
The furniture and the door make this project a winner. We installed a sliding barn door rather than installing a regular door. The sliding door doesn’t take up valuable space by opening into either the nursery or the main living area. It only needs a wall to slide across. And it is fairly easy to install. Bonus, it looks gorgeous.
We found beautiful and affordable cabinets at Ikea and chose one with a top sliding shelf-drawer that we used for storing baby’s shoes.
For decorating our new nursery, we began with this very simple DIY (do it yourself) furniture upgrade. We added decorative peal-and-stick wallpaper to the inside sides of the larger cabinet.
The room decor should also be functional. Remember our easy DIY painted basket shelves post? They work so well for baby’s books, toys and changing table supplies. For the final touches, we hung a few adorable pieces of art, such as a pretty wire art “goodnight” and a couple of DIY framed quotes. (another option: A “goodnight” in wood wall art. So adorable!)
As for furniture, a crib and changing table are needed of course. With space at a premium, creating a changing table on top of a cabinet not only saves space but also provides more storage to the room.
It all came together so beautifully. We love the new baby’s nursery. So many spaces can be created from other useful areas. Space under the staircase space can be converted for storage or book- shelves. Use room dividers to make one room into two. You can also turn a closet into a small home office area. What have you changed in your home to turn an area to a more useful one? We would love to hear your designs!
