Easy Stairway Update on a budget – for only $75
A home entry is the first impression that a visitor gets when they are inside your home. An easy update to can be some fresh paint: contrasting hues of ivory and deep chocolate are modern yet classic at the same time.
My home was built in 1989~white wash and brass! Lots to update, one project at a time. Not to mention all wallpapered walls and everything in peach & green southwest style. Lots of wall paper removed over the years. Some updates done, still plenty to do.
My husband and I refinished this staircase ourselves for under $75. Some sanding, painters tape, & lots of patience (I went thru two stain colors until I found this one), Mahogany Gel Stain is the way to go! I used the same white paint we used on our baseboards but in a gloss Kelly Moore Swiss Coffee.
It’s a great feeling when you can do a fairly doable home improvement project on your own. And this one makes that especially so because its a main focal point of our home. Every day we walk these stairs & feel so much pride in the fact that we did it on our own. If we could do it, most anyone can do it.

Hi–
I can’t find directions for this staircase DIY. Is there a hyperlink I’m missing? Also, if you go with the white posts and surround (below posts), should you paint all woodwork in the room (living room in my case) white?
Thanks so much,
Carole

Hi Carole, Our apologies, we do not have a hyperlink. We just wrote out how we did the makeover in order of our post. It has a lot to do with the pictures too. Mostly prepping, sanding and finishing. Your question about keeping all white is a tough call. You would have to consider the style of your home, your interior and most important what you love. We were going for a bit of a contrast with a dark brown with white. If you go with white posts, consider the wear and tear with family- imperfections might show easier. Hope that helps with your decision. Love to see it when you are done.
