The FruGirls are Chalk Painting Furniture for the very first time!
Please note that some products were supplied to us but our opinions are always our own.
You might be catching on to the fact that we love DIY projects but we don’t have the time or the patience to do “complicated”. Some of Chalk Paint’s more recent growth in popularity is for it’s ability to be applied in a variety of easy techniques plus no major prep work, like sanding or priming needed- we so like that! Thank you to DecoArt for supplying us with these amazing Chalk Paints & giving us the chance to explore & share with you this first time experience. Especially, if it helps those who might be wondering if they should &/or could give Chalk Painting a try. We have a few pieces of furniture to paint so stick around to see how they go. For now, we are starting with 2 nightstands. They are in ok shape but looking a little old, we are hoping we can give them new life with a new-vintage look.
Supplies we needed: DecoArt Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paints (many colors to choose from), DecoArtAmericana Finish Wax, & we also tried some of the DecoArtVarnish. Click on the links to read DecoArt’s full product descriptions. We used a variety of size brushes & rags.
We started with taking the drawers out & painting all pieces white. We did try to experiment a bit by using deep brown wax on the drawers & tops of nightstands. After we opted to paint over with white (will go better in white & gray in a little girls room). The chalk paint is thick & dries quickly. Using a thin brush we paint gray chalk paint into the grooves and wipe away the extra paint. After everything was dry we used a rag & applied creme wax to protect & seal the chalk paint. A nice feature to the wax is the creamy consistency- which allows it to go on easily. We then added some clear matte varnish to the tops to give added protection from items being placed on the table tops. We love the way these tables came out. Instead of looking old & worn, it now looks shabby chic & vintage.
An optional thing to consider with updating a piece of furniture. New or old, an easy way to personalize your piece is to change the hardware. A crystal drawer pull or even more colorful. There are tons to choose from out there & in all different price ranges. You don’t have to spend a lot either.
Hope you will stay close ’cause we have a couple more chalk paint furniture project coming soon. Make sure not to miss a FrugElegance Post & sign up for our email notification!

I used chalk paint on my magazine rack for the first time and it was easy to use. I love that you can distress it easily and use the wax for a slight sheen. It is my new favorite.

Hi Bonnie, We are not chalk paint experts at all so hate to give you advice on that. But would suggest to contact the chalk paint company. The good part about chalk paint is you dont need to prime so just a guess that you might be able to do it. Let us know how it comes out 😉
