Brisket is a wonderful traditional main course for the Passover Seder & any other Jewish Holiday meal. The recipe varies in so many ways- you can make it sweeter or spicy, slice thick or thin, serve with veggies or not.
I wanted to see if a modern favorite of mine, the crockpot, would be good for making brisket. I decided to make both & test it out. One I baked in the oven, the other in the crock pot. And there is no doubt that the good old fashion way is the best. The crockpot brisket came out tough & the color was dull. The oven baked Brisket came out juicy, soft & delicious!
Here’s my recipe that is a tweaked version of my mother’s & her mother.
Ingredients: (remember you can alter per your preferences!)
- 1 large “flat cut” Brisket. (I like Costco)
- 2 cans (14oz) of Tomato Sauce (plain kind)
- 1 small bag of mini carrots
- 1 bag of mini potatoes (you can get larger & cut them up, I go for easy & cook the mini potatoes whole & with skin)
- 1 small bag pearl onions, peeled or 1 bag of Lipton onion soup mix
- seasoning: paprika, salt, pepper
- optional: mushrooms, peppers, etc
- Pour 1 can of tomato sauce onto large baking dish.
- Place brisket flat across the baking dish on top of the tomato sauce
- Sprinkle all your seasoning to taste -salt, pepper & a little paprika
- Pour other can of tomato sauce across brisket
- Put all veggies on top
- Fully cover with tin foil & bake in oven 325 for 1-1/2 to 2 hours.
- Carefully remove hot baking dish from oven & remove the brisket & slice (thinly).
- Return sliced brisket back to baking dish, mix all ingredients, cover & return to oven to cook till soft. (approx 2-4 hours). Brisket is great cooking a long amount of time. Stir the ingredients every so often to make sure everything is cooking evenly & meat is in the sauce (of it will get dry).
Brisket is a great dish all year round. My family’s favorite to serve it with Kasha. And nothing beats the leftovers – A brisket sandwich! ENJOY!
